Networking

We used to train students on how to network in the career center when I worked there. In one demonstration, I played the scared, unprepared, lacking confidence student. In the second version of the demo I played the confident I know how to talk about my work student. The class related. I think I have to remember this example and practice again. My art has changed so much from back then when I used to paint...As a reminder, there's the 15, 30 and 60 second intro. In practice I have found its a lot more challenging. At the recent Curating and Risk, my former professor, complimented me that I was getting better. Every encouragement helps. It's exciting to meet artists whose work you love. It's even nicer to walk away knowing you didn't make a fumbling arse of yourself. I think at a minimum it's good to at least introduce yourself and mention your medium as a starting point for conversation or something that you think the other will connect on. It's all about finding common connections.

At the Curating and Risk talk, some of the presenters also emphasized the need for networking. Shake hands, get those business cards out there.

some notes...

theatrical experience - video viewing experience beginning to end

vs gallery installation space for video - short loops, nonlinear

"How do you engage risk and is there an audience for your risk?"

"What would happen if you didn't do the project?"

one panelist answered... to speak about political truth using abstraction is risky. Risking intelligibility.

my continued obsession with failure, one panelist advised "recover from your mistakes, or what you learned after taking risk and being uncomfortable" RECOVER. i learned failure is the new sexy.... what are the implications? do i show you more work that i took big risks and feel embarrassed and proud in the same moment?

"what is the risk? what is at stake?"

"is there pleasure or some fun in taking the risk? "

INTENSITY ADDICTION
