Roxana Pérez-Méndez @ PAFA

I headed out to PAFA to see the Warhol photos on my lunch break. This might have been enough time but I wasn't expecting to pay $15.00 to see the exhibit. On the way I went to the wrong building first and unexpectedly stumbled on a solo show of work by Roxana Pérez-Méndez. If you live in Philly, please go see this show. You have until Sept 26.

I've been following Roxana's work since learning about it through meeting her at Vox. I've never seen so much of it and incorporated into a site specific space in one place. It was brilliant. The idea of otherness resonated. I just want to gush about her work and am conflicted about being professional talking about her but that's what the other vscatblog.blogspot.com is for, ok. Seriously I thought I saw her tonight at the ICA opening and almost got teary eyed. I'm so emotional lately! But her artwork was so moving. I guess you could say I had a transformative experience.

The entry way into the show has a quote about otherness which set the tone of the video installations. Images of the artist superimposed using a reflection technique onto different scenarios. Actually i just listened to the Kehinde Wiley interview on Bad at Sports and this interface of foreground and background embracing and engaging contradictions was part of his work too and it was evident here. (Kehinde's interview was so articulate and purposeful, listen to this too if you can, he explains much better than I ever could. He had flow in his vocabulary and language about his art).

ok i can't finish this now as i have to prepare for traffic court tomorrow and pay some bills and just got in from the ICA opening which I'm really glad I went to earlier this evening.
