Gala as Art Slideshow By Greg Allen
my notes:
greg's likeable quotes "when harry met sally moment…
gala in jeans, a grubby gala (re lou reed)"
wish i was friends with andrea fraser
if you commission the gala as a happening it loses the integrity as a happening and negates itself as the thing it strives to be. mission fail. a gala is never a happening. a party is never a happening. you cannot hijack something and make it a happening. a happening is a thing of itself, like the filmic. it can never be hijacked.
ugh and then immersive. and being insidethe work. that's my aspiration. but in terms of a gala it makes me want to vomit. i see how this session really made bill angry and i'm not even up to hearing the part about eli broad which is what set him off. but why should it make me angry that the rich have a version of the DIY aesthetic that i love. BECAUSE they are not thinking about materials and waste and impact on environment and all people.
some words about culture, for who, content and cost, were here but they are deleted. i will say i am quickly becoming a fan of Jennifer Rubell, especially after watching and listening to this slide show.
memorable words
competing galas to titillate and entertain to raise money. gala's raise money. gala as art has not worked yet.
art as entertainment?
