Two galleries are streaming their activities on ustream. I watched part of the session Bad Curating last night from the #class show. My resolution to go to New York once a month was not met this month. February is probably the toughest month of the year. You have to do taxes and it just sits over you til you figure it out. Concept gained from "Bad Curating": Cultural Currency. Reminded me of the talk from the CAA 2010 Meta Mentors Panel with Jorge Benitez. Jorge Benitez asks us to ask ourselves "how do you define success?" and suggests we let the superlatives go and reminds us that ideas are our currency.
Benitez emphasized that art is not sports, where you have the greatest swimmer of all time for instance. On the other hand his talk reminded me of a book I recently read, Mind Gym: An Athlete's Guide to Inner Excellence by Gary Mack, which I used on my artist residency . Jorge presented rules of operation for artists (another blogger mentions many of them here. The rule most notable for me was the one on failure, don't be afraid of it and Jorge himself admitted he fails everyday, everyday! It's ok to fail.... you have to be ok with failure to keep going. And like the Mind Gym explains that for athletes 50% of the game is mental, so too did Jorge agree that 50% of success is absolutely mental for artists and being ok with failure is a necessity for survival. A much needed reminder.

In searching for the #class on ustream I went to Winkelman's blog as part of the research, and I saw that the first SUAILAYA session already took place! My image I submitted was reviewed. It comes up pretty quick in the slide show. And my stomach did a little flip when I saw it. I'm sharing the link. The slide show on the site is 60 images long, 10 seconds an image. 6 minutes. So many good quality images and good work....reviewing is nice. My new twitter friend I made yesterday who is from Australia @artbyEVANGELINE was in the group too!
